A Whole Lotta Lotta...

When I originally started this post, there was going to be lots and lots of words and lots and lots of pictures.  However...I'm over it so now there will just be lots and lots of pictures with a little amount of words...you know I cannot do anything short-winded!

No specific order.  No specific reason.  Caleb visited his doc yesterday for a re-check...he is now brace free and able to start shooting a ball.  He was so worried that his bone would not heal in time for ball tryouts.  It isn't yet, but he's on his way. {curly little locks like his dad when the hair grows out...betcha've never seen it this long before...}
A couple weeks ago our family walked in the Making Strides 5k.  Obviously Caleb was exempt from the walk and it was way too cold for him to join us at Heritage Landing and just sit while we walked.  He was with us in spirit.
IT WAS COLD!  But WOW! What a great day.  I would do it again and again and again.  And I will be.  With my family again  And mom too.  It was a very humbling experience.  Breast cancer sucks!  There are many great people doing really great things out there, though.  I don't feel right doing my very little part but I suppose it's still something.

{too funny...you can tell how windy it was by checking out Ashley's bangs...straight up in the air!}

{my little pouter pants was so sad because his bad mom didn't bring her purse to the walk to pay for face painting...as you can already tell, I came through.  Okay, not really, but Auntie did.  It helps having your BFFs running face painting show...did you know you can do it on loan that way?!}

Truly inspirational...this lady walked the entire 5k with the support of two Red Cross ladies...a seventy two year old spitfire.  You go, girl!!
Have I mentioned lately that repairing our fridge was a distant dream and nothing more?  It was leaking oil.  Thought we were being conned.  Didn't even know there is oil in the works area of a fridge.  Sigh.  So long front load washer and dryer.  Once I can afford you again, I hope you are everything I imagine.

As soon as our repair man left I headed to Lowes.  Not too excited to find out that stainless is mostly the option available for immediate purchase.  My appliances are all white.  Also not excited that the one I think I want was sold the day before {as a floor model} so I had to buy it sight unseen.  Lastly, super not excited that my options were incredibly limited because I have a built in area to work with and fridges these days are not the same as fourteen years ago.  My new fridge is taller so I had to take a piece of trim off the bottom of my upper cabinet to fit it in and also had to buy filler trim pieces to add to the sides because the darn new ones seem to be narrower.  The good news is my new one has more fresh food space than my previous.  The bad news is we had to forgo the automatic ice and water dispenser in the door.  We've been so spoiled.

Hill Billy style on the front porch...
The new one looks so cute.  And little.  But tall.

Last weekend, during the walk, Isaac and Kyle decided to get together on Sundays.  They were forming a Boys Club.  Ash wasn't too happy.  The first meeting was at the TenBrinkman's and the kids built a fort.  Tons of fun.  Andrew was asked to join.  The girls were told they could join.  This past Sunday was our turn to host.  Keith thought it would be great to build the kids a fort shell. {hehe}  He asked Kyle to help.  They were so cute together.
 They were still building at dusk.
 And still at dark.
 The fort shell is still sitting in the side yard.  It wasn't touched Sunday.  It may have something to do with me.  "Don't let anyone touch that shell until there are walls to sturdy it up.  Otherwise those posts will fall down much quicker than they went up.

I forgot to mention that I saved ten percent on my fridge.  Good thing.  I woke up to this a couple of days later...{complimentary ladybug included}
 I called a roofer but had to wait for the rain to stop for him to come out.  He was out Saturday.  Apparently, the original jack roofer didn't install flashing in that area of the roof.  As if that's an option.  I suppose at the end of the day, I had the money to pay for all of it without going the credit card route.  But the ceiling isn't fixed yet.

'Remember my dorky gangsta picture I posted last?  Here's living proof it can be worse...{but living proof he may actually come by it naturally...}
The Halloween Variety Show is coming up this weekend.  Andrew needed his costume by last Friday so he could participate in filming a clip.  Last minute it was cancelled.  Of course it didn't cancel before I made the frantic run to GW looking for, what else?  A nerdy zombie costume.  I bombed in Whitehall but did score this loot...three sports tees and a jacket.  It's good to have a GW in my town.  We can always use Whitehall tees!
 After work, Kyle and I headed to Muskegon to hit the GW not too far from our home.  He was a bloody mess.  He was over hungry and over tired.  He almost fell asleep in the store.  I HAD to find a costume for Andrew.  He settled on a neck tie instead of a bow tie and I settled on jeans instead of khakis and we were good to go.  And then I saw the costume.  I joked to Kyle, "Do you want to be a cheerleader for Halloween instead?"  He perked right up!  In addition to the pieces for Andrew's costume and the new cheerleading uniform, I also picked up this sweet AE hoodie.  SCORE!
Kyle is over the moon about his new costume.  He's debating whether to use last year's wig...
or Andrew's Joker wig for his hair.  Either will be fun!
We still need poms and a hair bow.  Kyle asked if he can wear eyeshadow and lipstick.  And glitter shaped like stars.  As you may guess, his dad is less than thrilled.  But Kyle is sooo excited!  He even wanted to show me his moves...
His proud mama likes that he's checking those wrists...
 Stellar execution! WOOT!
Maybe in my next life I will slow down enough to post something meaningful.  Til then...

As If I Need Another LONG Post...

I am tired this morning.  I was up til after midnight working on these...

 Funny.  It doesn't look like three and a half hours of work, but it was.  I had to finish them myself because poor Andrew had to go to bed. I deserved it, too.  I've put him on hold all week.  I'm having a horrible time with that.  It falls in line with me needing to paying better attention.  For the moment, anyway, Andrew is thrilled.  He only wanted four posters and wanted only one of them to be big.  I had five pieces of poster board so I was confused.  I told him we could work on more over the weekend.  And we're going to make him a tee to wear next week for the voting.  Did I mention he is running against half of the seventh grade for Student Council VP?  Lordy.

We hit the Grandville Mall last weekend kinda sorta for Caleb's birthday.  In July.  It's how we roll.  We've been planning to eat at a place called The Sports Center Cafe.  The situation was hilarious!  We stopped at the light, ready to turn left and I mentioned to all to keep an eye out for this restaurant and CR pointed and said that it was right next to us, on the corner.  I looked and looked but saw nothing.  It was a rinky dink little hole in the wall in a small strip mall.  We were cracking up!  We turned the corner and pulled into the side lot and the place has a drive-thru window...like the kind you don't have to drive through!  Like at an ice cream store.  We decided to give it a chance anyway.  It was small but the menu was huge and it was a fun little place with really good food.  And like seven plasmas and a big screen.  A pleasing place I would visit again.  And I even got a punch card. ☺

After, we hit the mall.  I split from the boys and did a little retail therapy.  However, after doing so, I really need therapy!  Caleb ordered a hat from Lids that had to be special ordered.  Keith was less than thrilled that Caleb spent thirty three dollars on it.  Caleb was psyched, however, and it was his money and he's very good with it so I didn't care.  I got the call from the Muskegon Lids that the hat was in and since the bigs were with their dad last weekend, I stopped by to pick it up.  Um...I'm old.  I say that very rarely.  Let's just say I am not a fan of the flat billed trucker hat.  Not a fan at all.  Knowing how ridiculous my son was going to look in it, I decided to show him just how ridiculous it is.
 I figured if I was going to actually take a picture of myself in it, I may as well play up the dork factor.

I think I mentioned that since the varsity played in Hart and were most likely going to win, Kyle had his birthday sleepover last Friday night.  Sigh.  I love sleepovers.  They are so easy.  Going to bed is another issue.  Needless to say, I spent the night on the couch.  Not as comfy as my bed, especially when I was going to have it all to myself, but the alternative was to have a friend go home in the middle of the night.  I take for granted that everyone can handle sleepovers because my kids can.  Poor dolly.  Ah well.  It all worked out in the end.  CB fell asleep within minutes of me grabbing my pillow and blanket.  Sweet thing.
 The day after the sleepover wasn't as good.  Kyle and I spent the day in Muskegon picking up Halloween and poster supplies.  Kyle is going to be a Root Beer can and Andrew is going to be Lady Gaga.  Caleb wanted to be a couch potato but decided against it.  He hasn't come up with anything else as of yet.  He texted me and said if he can't come up with anything else he'll just be a potato.  A POTATO?!?!  Really?

Anywho, we spent way too much time out and about, ended up fighting with me screaming and him crying and then he fell asleep.  Once home, Kyle woke up ready to party, but his momma had other plans.  I was exhausted, he was exhausted and we were both hungry.  Kyle had eaten lunch.  I had not.  I made myself a little dinner and loaded him up with leftover pizza and chips and we vegged out on the couch from about five o'clock on.  Until we both fell asleep.  Wonderful.

Also recently, we celebrated a surprise birthday for my friend N8.  I think he was really surprised.  Love these cheeks.  I think it's because they look like my hubby's.  And that is funny because these two are built so different. ☺
 So y'all know my obsession with a new washer and dryer.  No, I don't need them.  But I need them.  For my sanity.  Now that I have the money I want to hold onto it.  It's a lot of money.  But really I just want to make sure I make an educated purchase so I am taking my time.  Well...Sunday night my fridge broke.  It isn't dead, but I really wish it was so that by now, Thursday, I'd have my food in a new one. In my kitchen. Instead, the food is in my sister's fridge. In her garage.  Ugh.  The darn thing runs and actually cycles through it's...cycle...but my otter pops go from liquid to solid ice and back to liquid again.  Then ice.  I think the problem is the condenser or that the cycle clock thingy simply sticks at the defrost mode and needs to be fixed.  Either way, we have a repairman coming out Saturday {overtime plus driving from Grand Haven scares me a bit} but if we can fix it for under two hundred dollars and the fridge will last us another year or more, we're golden and I can buy my washer and dryer.  Can you imagine how sad I was to think that money would be gone?  I might have even cried.  Or maybe just pouted.

During my Muskegon shopping trip last weekend I did pick up these lookers.  I think they are snazzy.  Maybe it's because they actually fit over my calves.  Bonus!  Keith likes them, too, but thought he had already bought me a pair.  He did.  For Christmas two years ago.  But I returned them because they didn't fit over my calves.  And the new owners of those boots also received a major bonus of gift cards to Victoria's Secret, Maurices and Charlotte Russe.  But that's another story and, yes, I'm still bitter.  {my fault.  not K's}  But aren't these cute?

Okay, so just to put it out there, Caleb broke his collar bone at practice Tuesday night.  He has what the doc calls an Angulate Fracture.  Basically, his break was right through the bone and the bones are hanging out, not straight. {not hanging out literally.  just hanging around}  He's wearing what he calls a sleeveless coat but it's a brace that kind of resembles a butterfly to me.  Maybe not really, but kind of.  It's to hold his shoulder back so the bone will have a chance to heal properly.  When he broke his other one when he was younger, he was in a sling.  I suppose with him being older and growing and all that he needs this extra help.  Either way, it sucks for him!  He's out the rest of the season and is totally worried about basketball tryouts next month.  He goes back to the doc in two weeks.  Pray for good news for him.

I joined a bible study at our new church and I think I'm going to really enjoy it.  The discussion the other night was about feeling valueless.  Ha.  God speaks in amazing ways to people.  That was the same night Caleb broke his bone.  I feel so incredibly helpless and useless to him.  This is when being a mom isn't so great.  I want to do something, anything for him and I cannot.  At least not to take away the pain.  And I feel bad, too, because he's at any age where he needs privacy with certain things and I felt horrible for him that I had to help him dry off after his shower last night.  Poor buddy.  It's bad enough feeling useless with little ones.  They are so needy and helpless themselves so when you cannot do anything for their pain, it's indescribable.  However, I'm learning that it doesn't get easier as the kids grow up.  I think it's tons worse that my teenager, who is fairly self-sufficient {☺} needs to be needy because he has no choice.  That's a tough pill to swallow for both of us I imagine.

I can ramble, can't I?  Plenty are already aware of this, but Monday night I added about thirty or so more people to that list.  I was asked to speak at the church congregational meeting that night and was terrified!  I'm not a public speaker by any means and I had to dig out the big girl panties again and I despise big girl panties!  I like my comfort zone well cushioned, thank you very much.  I prepared.  I talked to myself for two days.  I stressed.  I stressed some more.  I wrote down what I planned to say so I wouldn't forget anything.  I changed my mind.  I was a mess.  I was caught in the act once, which is something I'm never proud of.

Kyle: Mom, who are you talking to?

Me:  Remember?  I'm speaking tonight at the church meeting and I'm thinking about what I'm going to say in my head.

Kyle: Well, I can hear you!

I went home that day and rewrote everything.  I tried to condense parts because I was asked to say a few things and I couldn't say just a few things.  I read what I wrote to K and he tried adding stuff for me, which I love because he really has a way with words, but he was talking too fast and I couldn't keep up with my writing!  I decided to keep what I had.  Well, it all went out the window after I was introduced.  I think I got the first sentence out from the paper and it went from there.  Where, I don't really know because I'm not even sure what I said.  But it was long.  And I know everyone there was hoping to get out early to watch either the Tigers or the Lions.  Or both!  I was on a roll.  Until I finally said that although I could go on and on I wouldn't.  An elderly man behind me said, "Tell us how you really feel!"  Okay, okay...point taken!  the worst part is that whenever I speak in public my nerves get the best of me and my mouth dries out and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.  Well, I had a doozy of a time that night because the longer I talked, the dryer everything in my mouth got.  Toward the end, the left side of my top lip was rolled up inside my mouth and stuck to my teeth and the more I talked, the more my lip rolled til half my lip was gone and I was talking out the right side of my mouth.  Still talking, I was totally thinking about Jim Carrey in The Mask...Somebody Stop Me!!! {and I wish someone had!}  I was all teeth.  Ridiculous!  Afterward, pastor said, "WOW" and I replied, "I know! I can go on and on, huh?"  He said it was all good and that I spoke from my heart.  I did, so I guess it went okay.  At the end of the night, the vote passed, which was the idea, so YAY!  I'm sure, however, it had nothing to do with me.

Yup...this pretty much sums it up...

Thankful...

Today I am thankful.  For no reason in particular, but at the same time, for so many things.  Being a mom is a powerful thing.  More powerful than I realized, even after giving birth three times.  My heart has been affected in a major way but until today I didn't even know how much.  Today is a wonderful day.

Has it been a gazillion years since I've posted?  It certainly seems like it.  So many times I've wanted to sit down and talk but then when I would, I didn't feel like getting into anything.  I think it has to do with {now} being thankful. {refer to above}  And grateful.  For whatever reason anyway, today is the day.

The football team is playing Hart tonight away.  Assuming {only} that we'll beat them, I chose to plan Kyle's birthday sleepover for the evening.  Very low key.  He chose to invite three friends.  Yippee!  I've always told the boys I will spend the bucks if they decide to have a party and they can invite a large number of people if they desire to but sleepovers are food and drinks only and the entertainment falls on the shoulders of the person celebrating the birthday.  It has worked well for us in the past so I am sticking to it with Kyle.  Last year I spent tons of time with decor and whatnot for a party.  This year I spent seven dollars and eighty two cents {plus the pizza} and I'm basically done!  And I'm sure the kids will have just as much fun.  Keith is out of town this weekend so other than the craziness from the basement tonight {you'd be amazed at the amount of noise that can come from four boys.  I'm not because it usually comes from just one or two.} I get to sit alone, read and enjoy some chai tea.  It makes my heart sing.

With Keith out of town, Kyle is forced to spend time with me.  And I with him.  Daddy is Kyle's number one fan and vice versa.  It's nice to be "forced" to spend time together.  We always have fun.  Lots on the list.
  1. pumpkin roll
  2. joanns
  3. hobby lobby
  4. target
  5. pull out halloween decor
  6. go for a bike ride
Jo invited us to the pumpkin roll, which seems to be against both of our better judgements.  We shall see.  I've never been to one before.  Too much chaos for me.  We went to the Fall fest last weekend {or two?} and it was okay but nothing to write home about.  At least not for Klye.

Andrew is running for Vice President for Student Council and I need to grab him some supplies at the craft store for his campaign.  He'll need lots of anything I can do for him because one of his opponents is JZ and I got nuttin' on his mama.  She rules the roost in all things crafty and fabulous.  Andrew's stuff won't compare to JZ's for sure, but I'll do my extra special best. ☺{totally envious of you, JZ, but admire the heck out of ya!}  Also, it's time to start thinking Halloween costumes!!

I've been putting off doing anything about a new battery for Kyle's camera.  I do believe my last post mentioned something about me promising to work on paying attention and not blowing my children off. {or something like that}  I told Kyle we would stop at Target and pick a battery up.  I'll surprise him with a trip to the snack bar...his favorite place to eat!  Plus I have some cash to spend there and lucky me gets to spend it on jeans for the boys!  I figure they are free that way so what the heck!  My biggest has a flood issue and it has to be handled pronto.  Technically, the pant length is fine.  But just fine.  I asked him to ask his dad if the jeans were okay in length and then I corrected myself to say to ask his dad if I'd think the length was okay.  His dad said yes on both counts and then made a great point of saying both him and Keith are five inches taller than Caleb and they both have a thirty two inch inseam.  I was dropping it, even though it was making me crazy that his jeans aren't long enough.  What do you do?  They don't make a thirty one for men.  Then my lovely seester pointed out that Caleb is all legs and because he's still growing, his top and bottom halves are not yet proportioned.  Brilliant!  That made perfect sense so I had him try Keith's jeans on.  Other than the infomercial I witnessed for NutriSystem {"I've lost thirty pounds on NutriSystem" is what I heard as he dropped the pants to the floor} I felt that even though the length was a tad long, it could be done!  Now the issue is finding a pair of jeans to fit.  28x32 isn't exactly a common size.  Twenty nines are ridiculous but that's what a belt is for I suppose.  If all else fails, I know we can get by with a 29x30 for now...if he only cinches the waist a little, they'll still hang enough to make up for the difference in length!

Did you get all that?  Yowza.  Some things are better kept to ourselves.  Anyway, we're also going to get our pumpkin and Halloween stuff out.  Kyle asked the other day and as I told him it was too early, I remembered we had already entered October.  Freakish!  It'll be fun.  I don't have too many Halloween items but if I ever throw a party for it, watch out!  I have So. Much. Party. Stuff.  WOOT!

Kyle and I spent time last Tuesday, before school, taking a ride on the bike path.  The forecast was threatening rain so I wasn't too keen on Kyle possibly getting wet and sitting all day in those clothes.  Surprise!  It rained!  Oh well.  He wasn't too bad off.  It was nice to have that time together.  We're going to do it again tomorrow.  I've been wanting to get on the new portion of the bike path and this will be our opportunity.  I'm totally loving this weather.

Okay, here's something on my mind...does anyone else have this problem?

I walked past Caleb's room and caught a glimpse of this.  This was after I asked Caleb to make his bed.  I suppose he did what I asked...in a random, round about way.  On the other hand...really?  How did he not notice his missing bed sheet when he was making the bed?  {and that's not mentioning the rest of the mess}It's not like the rest of the blankets were at least all together or anything like that.  Every morning, after I look in to see whether or not he made his bed before leaving for school,{lol} I have to pick up Caleb's comforter and quilt off the floor because they are always laying on the power strip and I'm a freak about stuff like that!  Did I mention a conversation I had with Kyle about a friend's boy mowing the lawn?  To sum it up, it went kind of like this...

K:Why is Ryan mowing the lawn?  He's too young.

J:He's not too young.  he's eleven.

K:He's too young.

J:Believe it or not, Kyle, outside of our fantasy fairy tale home, other children your age, especially your brothers' ages, do real chores and help out around the house.  I'm afraid none of you will survive on your own.  you'll all starve and have to wear dirty clothes.

K:Don't worry.  I'm going to live with Caleb when he graduates.

J:Well, you'll only be ten when he leaves for college so fat chance.  And, tell me...who's going to take care of who??

The sad thing is, I really would wonder that!!  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.
